What Causes Constipation?

Constipation occurs due to various factors such as diet, level of movement and stress levels. According to Ayurveda science, constipation occurs due to the cold and dry qualities of Vata, which disturbs the colon. The solution is to add warmth, oil, and hydration to the system. This counteracts the vata’s dry qualities and helps in return of the normal bowel movements.

Constipation can have serious negative effects on the quality of life and can also affect the physical and mental health. Over the counter medications for constipation treatment, help in relieving it but are habit forming and can be harmful in long run. There are many natural ways to relieve constipation and prevent it from coming back.

Keep Yourself Hydrated

Dehydration makes you constipated. Therefore it is very important to drink plenty of water to keep the bowels moving. Warm water and fluid are considered best, as they balance the cold properties of Vata. The water intake should be at least after half n hour of eating meals.

Eat a Fiber-Rich Diet

Fiber helps in adding the bulk to the stool and also improves the consistency of stool, making them easier to pass. The insoluble fiber such as wheat bran, whole grains, and vegetables adds bulk to the stool and the soluble fiber such as oats, nuts, seeds, lentil and some fruits and vegetables, help in softening the stool.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is the well known natural remedy to relieve constipation. The oil breaks down into smaller components to stimulate the small and large intestine. One or two teaspoons of oil can be taken empty stomach or it can also be consumed with milk. The result is quick and easy.

Triphala

It is an Ayurvedic medicine and a very effective in the treatment of constipation. Unlike the laxatives, it is not habit forming. As the bowel movements become regular, if you stop the usage there are no withdrawal symptoms. Chronic constipation can lead to other severe health issues such as piles, hemorrhoids or fissures which can prove to be of great discomfort.
